Suspect Uses Pepper Spray in Carjacking, Victim Responds with Gun

CHICAGO, IL — A 16-year-old suspect was shot early Tuesday morning after a failed carjacking attempt on the city’s South Side. The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. near 82nd Street and Ashland Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood.

According to local media, a 47-year-old man was sitting in his Toyota Camry when he was approached by a group of four individuals who demanded his vehicle. During the encounter, one of the suspects used a chemical agent—believed to be pepper spray—on the victim in an attempt to subdue him, according to police reports.

The victim, who holds both a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card and an Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL), responded by firing at the attackers. One of the suspects, a 16-year-old male, was struck in the left knee and suffered a grazing wound to his left arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.

The other three suspects managed to flee the scene in the victim’s Toyota Camry, heading eastbound. The vehicle and the remaining suspects have not yet been located.

The victim was treated on the scene and did not require hospitalization. No additional injuries were reported.

As of now, no charges have been filed, and the investigation by the Chicago Police Department is ongoing.

This incident highlights the importance of being prepared for unexpected threats, especially when vulnerable in a vehicle. While this defender successfully used his firearm to protect himself after being pepper-sprayed, it’s a good reminder that self-defense tools and awareness can complement each other. In confined spaces like a vehicle, defensive sprays, impact weapons, or firearms can all be useful, depending on the situation. Always remain aware of your surroundings and have a plan in place for how to react if you are suddenly targeted.
