PROVO, UT (2-minute read) — Four people ended up at Utah Valley Hospital after Provo police say a man armed with a pocket knife assaulted multiple people outside a motel on New Years Eve.

According to a media release from Provo Police spokesperson Janna Lee Holland, officers were called around 8:30 p.m. to the Travelers Inn parking lot near 100 East and 300 South. Investigators believe the incident began as a verbal argument between two men.

Police say the situation escalated when the suspect, identified as 32 year old Esston Aluqdah of Arizona, allegedly pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the other man several times. Court documents state that a woman suffered a cut to her arm during the chaos, and that Aluqdah also threatened to kill another woman who tried to step in.

When a second man attempted to help, investigators say Aluqdah threatened him by pressing the knife against his neck. Police say the woman and that man were able to get away, but the violence did not stop there.

Provo parking lot stabbing investigation continues

Investigators allege Aluqdah then turned on a third man who was not part of the original dispute. A fourth victim was also attacked, with court documents claiming Aluqdah knocked him unconscious with a single punch and continued to assault him while he was down.

All four victims, three men and one woman, were transported to Utah Valley Hospital and were reported in stable condition.

Aluqdah was booked into the Utah County Jail on two counts of second degree felony aggravated assault and two counts of third degree felony aggravated assault. Provo Police say detectives are still actively investigating.

Safety Tip: If you witness a violent confrontation involving a blade, prioritize distance and cover, call 911 immediately, and avoid closing in unless you must protect a life. In many cases, the safest move is to get people out of danger, be a good witness, and remember that safe firearm storage and knowledge of Utah self defense laws are essential for responsible carry.
