PHOENIX, AZ — A man is dead and two women are injured after a stabbing at a Phoenix apartment complex on July 19, and the person reported to have stopped the attacker was not a responding officer. It was a neighbor with a gun.

As reported by AZCentral, officers responded to reports of screams, gunshots and a possible stabbing at the complex, where they found a man dead and two women injured, according to Phoenix Police Department spokesperson Cmdr. Mercedes Fortune. AZCentral reports that a neighbor shot the attacker after the stabbing left the two women hurt.

That is the entire verified picture right now, and I want to be upfront about how thin it is. Phoenix PD has not released the names of anyone involved, the conditions of the two women, or any details about the neighbor who reportedly fired. I could not find a Phoenix PD release or official post on this incident, so everything above traces back to the department’s spokesperson through AZCentral’s reporting.

More from USA Carry:

Even this sparse, the shape of the story matters. If the reporting holds, a neighbor used a firearm against a man who had just stabbed two women, and stopping that attack is the only justification that matters here. The neighbor has not been publicly identified, no charging decision has been announced, and that call belongs to investigators and prosecutors.

What I keep coming back to is proximity. Nobody plans on a neighbor’s emergency becoming theirs, but this one apparently did, and someone in that complex was ready when it happened.
