Motorcyclist Fatally Shoots Man Charging with Hammer in Maryland Road Rage Confrontation

GLEN BURNIE, MD — A road rage incident turned deadly on November 7, 2024, when a 22-year-old motorcyclist reportedly shot and killed a 51-year-old man who allegedly attacked him with a hammer. The confrontation took place near East Furnace Branch Road and Margate Drive around 8:20 p.m., prompting a swift response from the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Officers arrived at the scene to find 51-year-old Scott David Guhse of Glen Burnie lying in the road with apparent gunshot wounds. Fire Department personnel pronounced Guhse deceased at the scene. Nearby, officers located the 22-year-old motorcyclist, who reported that he had acted in self-defense after being assaulted. The motorcyclist, who holds a concealed handgun permit in Maryland, cooperated with investigators.

According to preliminary findings, the incident began as the 22-year-old was riding his motorcycle in the area of Route 10 and Furnace Branch Road. The motorcyclist noticed another vehicle following closely and driving aggressively. The driver of the other vehicle, later identified as Guhse, reportedly pulled alongside the motorcyclist, yelling at him and driving erratically. Guhse then allegedly veered dangerously close to the motorcycle, causing the rider to pull off the road.

The situation escalated when both individuals stopped on East Furnace Branch Road, where, according to the motorcyclist, Guhse exited his vehicle and advanced toward him with a hammer in hand. Fearing for his safety, the motorcyclist drew his handgun and fired, striking Guhse.

Detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Homicide Unit are leading the investigation, with evidence collection and witness interviews ongoing.
