WABASSO, FL (3-minute read) — Authorities in Indian River County arrested a 62-year-old man after a tense encounter outside the Wabasso Food Mart, where a courageous store employee’s quick action likely saved lives.

Sheriff’s deputies said the suspect, identified as Calvert Allen, was waving a firearm outside the store and threatening people. A frantic 911 caller reported, “A man up here got a gun and he’s telling everybody to get out of the store; he wants to kill somebody.” Moments later, another caller said, “He just went in the store, he just drew it on my sister.”

Store Employee’s Quick Thinking Prevents Harm

Inside the store, customers panicked as Allen continued to wave his firearm. One witness described the fear, saying, “I was so scared. My heart was just pumping.”

Recognizing the danger, a store employee, who reportedly knew Allen, took control of the situation. She grabbed him by his shirt and pants, pulled him outside, and drew her own firearm. When he refused to comply with her commands to drop the gun, she fired two warning shots into the air, scaring him into stopping his advance.

Deputies arrived moments later and safely detained Allen. He now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and improper exhibition of a firearm.

Witnesses expressed gratitude that no one was injured. “She was brave. She stood up when everyone else froze,” one bystander said.

Firearms and Responsible Self-Defense

While firing warning shots is generally discouraged because of safety risks and legal implications, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of situational awareness and responsible firearm handling. In Florida, lawful concealed carry holders are encouraged to de-escalate whenever possible and to understand the full scope of state self-defense laws.

Local authorities noted that Allen had been dealing with personal challenges, which may have contributed to his erratic behavior.

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings when carrying a firearm. If you must draw your firearm, ensure your actions align with state laws on self-defense and the use of deadly force. Avoid firing warning shots, as they can endanger bystanders and carry serious legal consequences.
