City and state police and FBI Boston are investigating after a video that appears to show a person holding a gun on the University of Massachusetts (UMass) campus in Lowell was shared on social media Wednesday afternoon.

The video, which has been validated by the Lowell Police Department, shows a man holding a long gun, walking behind Riverview Suites Residence Hall. A student witnessing the incident called 911, prompting a large response.

There were no reports of a shooting.

A campus-wide shelter in place order was issued as UMass Lowell and city police attempted to find the suspect. The order was lifted at about 5:15 p.m., after authorities determined the suspect was no longer in the vicinity.

All classes and events on campus for the remainder of the day were canceled, and a large police presence remains in place on campus. Officers will be stationed at residence halls through the night.

FBI Boston, Massachusetts State Police, and the ATF responded to investigate.

Rep. Lori Trahan, D-Mass., said she was monitoring the situation and remains in touch with local officials.

Nearby Middlesex Community College canceled all classes and activities at both its Bedford and Lowell campuses due to heightened police activity and significant traffic delays.

UMass Lowell is a public research university roughly 40 miles north of Boston. The incident occurred on the school’s first day of academic classes.

The Lowell Police Department did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

FBI Boston declined further comment on the investigation.
