Does a civilian concealed carry holster need an active retention system? Is it really necessary, or is it overkill?
For those unfamiliar with retention systems, most (almost all) civilian holsters rely on passive retention methods to secure the gun. An example of a passive retention system is an adjustable tension screw that tightens the holster, creating more friction to help prevent the gun from falling out under normal daily wear. On the other hand, an active retention system relies on a mechanical device to keep the gun holstered. For example, you might need to press a button tied to a latch gripping the trigger guard to draw the gun. Without the button being pressed, the gun will not come out.
The Safariland GLS Slim IWB Holster is an oddity on the market because it is one of the few civilian concealed carry holsters with active retention. Active retention has been kind of a hallmark of Safariland since the beginning, so I’m not surprised this holster has it. I’ll talk more about it below, but for now, file that away and read on.
First Impressions
When I first tried the Safariland GLS Slim IWB Holster for my Taurus GX4, I was immediately impressed by the quality and craftsmanship. Safariland has a strong reputation in the holster market, and it’s clear why when you look at their products closely. The GLS Slim IWB holster is sleek, robust, and designed with user comfort and firearm security in mind.
Safariland Design and Construction
The holster features durable polymer construction that feels solid without being overly heavy. The material offers a good balance of flexibility and rigidity, essential for an inside-the-waistband holster. The slim and low-profile design makes it an excellent choice for concealed carry, whether you prefer appendix carry or strongside hip carry.
One of the standout features is the holster’s overall slimness. It adds very little bulk to the gun, which is crucial for an IWB holster. This slim design ensures that the holster is comfortable to wear all day, whether I’m sitting, standing, or moving around.
Retention System
The retention system is one of the most critical aspects of any holster, and Safariland’s GLS (Grip Lock System) does not disappoint. The GLS active retention system is designed to automatically secure the firearm upon holstering and release it with a natural and intuitive motion, assuming you press the button with your middle finger. How hard is that to do? Not very, once you get used to it. It’s in a logical place where a good grip naturally goes. Give it a couple of draws, and you’ll be fine.
Goods of the Retention System
Automatic Locking: As soon as I holster my Taurus GX4, I can feel the GLS mechanism engage. It gives a reassuring click, letting me know my firearm is securely in place. This automatic locking is fantastic because it eliminates the need for manual retention adjustments or extra steps to secure the firearm.
Natural Release: Your middle finger activates the GLS retention system as you acquire your shooting grip. This means that drawing the firearm is smooth and natural. There’s no need to fumble with thumb releases or additional buttons, which can be a significant advantage in a high-stress situation.
Secure Retention: The GLS system holds the firearm firmly in place. I’ve tested it with vigorous movements, and the gun stays put, which is exactly what you want in a retention system. Whether running, jumping, or bending, I have confidence that my Taurus GX4 isn’t going anywhere until I want it to.
Bads of the Retention System
Learning Curve: For those who are used to traditional retention systems, the GLS might take a little getting used to. The middle finger release is intuitive once you’ve practiced it, but it can feel awkward initially. A few dry-fire practice sessions are necessary to build muscle memory and ensure a smooth draw.
Potential Interference with Clothing: Depending on your carry position and clothing choices, the GLS system can sometimes be obstructed. For example, if you’re wearing very tight pants or a thick gun belt, you might find it harder to get your middle finger in the correct position for a quick draw. It’s not a deal-breaker but something to be aware of.
Comfort and Concealability
Comfort is key to IWB holsters, and the Safariland GLS Slim excels in this area. The holster’s slim profile means it doesn’t dig into my side or cause discomfort, even after prolonged wear. The polymer material is smooth against the skin, and the edges are well-rounded to prevent irritation.
The GLS Slim lives up to its name for concealability. The holster hugs the body closely, reducing printing and making it easy to hide under a variety of clothing options. Whether I’m wearing a T-shirt, a button-down, or a jacket, the holster remains discreet.
Versatility: Appendix Carry vs. Strongside Hip Carry
One of the features I appreciate most about the Safariland GLS Slim IWB Holster is its versatility. It works equally well for both appendix and strongside hip carry, giving me options based on my daily needs and activities.
Appendix Carry
The slim design and smooth edges are significant advantages for appendix carry. I’m not a big appendix carry guy, mainly because I’m just an overall big guy, but this holster is almost doable for me and would certainly be doable for someone who regularly appendix carries. The holster sits comfortably in the front of the waistband, and the GLS system’s middle finger release is easily accessible. Drawing from the appendix position is quick and natural with this holster. Additionally, the low profile means it doesn’t create an obvious bulge, even when wearing a semi-fitted shirt.
Strongside Hip Carry
The GLS Slim IWB Holster also performs admirably when carried on the strongside hip. The holster’s cant can be adjusted slightly, allowing for a more customized fit. Drawing from this position is straightforward, thanks to the GLS system, and the holster remains comfortable throughout the day. Whether I’m driving, sitting at a desk, or walking around, the holster doesn’t shift or cause discomfort.
Parting Shot
Overall, the Safariland GLS Slim IWB Holster for the Taurus GX4 is an outstanding choice for anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable, and versatile holster for concealed carry. The quality of construction, combined with the innovative GLS retention system, makes it a standout product in the market. It provides a secure, comfortable, and concealable option for carrying the Taurus GX4. The innovative retention system and the holster’s sleek design make it a top choice for anyone serious about concealed carry. Whether you prefer appendix carry or strongside hip carry, this holster delivers the performance and reliability you need.
