A 16-year-old was shot during a carjacking attempt on Chicago’s South Side when an armed driver defended himself. The suspect was injured, while others fled in the victim’s car.

CHICAGO, IL (2-minute read) — A carjacking early in the morning on Chicago’s South Side ended with one of the teenage suspects being shot by an armed driver. The incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. in the Gresham neighborhood, near 82nd Street and Ashland Avenue.

According to Chicago police, a group of four individuals approached a 47-year-old man who was sitting in his Toyota Camry, demanding his vehicle. One of the assailants reportedly discharged a chemical agent at the man in an attempt to overpower him.

The man, who holds a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card and a Concealed Carry License (CCL), responded by firing his firearm at the suspects. A 16-year-old male was hit in the left knee and also grazed by a bullet in his left arm. Emergency services transported the injured suspect to a local hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.

The remaining suspects managed to steal the man’s car, fleeing eastbound in the Toyota Camry. The man was treated on the scene, but no other injuries were reported. The police are actively investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed as of yet.

Self-defense incidents involving concealed carriers, like this one, highlight the importance of knowing when and how to act in dangerous situations. While the man was fortunate to escape serious harm, the use of force must always be weighed against potential risks and legal considerations.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm for self-defense, always be aware of your surroundings and avoid situations where you might be caught off guard. Properly securing your firearm and knowing how to react under pressure are critical for your safety.
