ANN ARBOR, MI — An armed store clerk in Ann Arbor fired one shot after a man produced a firearm inside the business, and both that man and a second man who was already inside took off on foot.

The clerk fired a single round. No one was struck. Both men ran from the store.

Two men, one of them pulling a gun, in a space the clerk cannot leave. That is the whole problem in one sentence. The person behind a counter has no exit and no distance to create.

More from USA Carry:

I report on convenience stores and gas stations getting hit constantly. They are open late, they are usually run by one or two people, and they have cash in the drawer, which makes them a fast, low-effort target for anyone looking for quick money and a quick exit. The clerk working that counter is the only one there when it starts. Good on this one for being armed. The round did not connect, and at counter distance with two men moving, that happens more often than people think. It changed the situation anyway, and both men left without hurting anybody.

Neither suspect has been publicly identified, and neither has the clerk. No arrest has been announced. Whether the clerk’s use of force was lawful is a determination for prosecutors, and no charging decision has been made public.
