A pre-dawn attack in Marlin, Texas left three people stabbed and one suspect dead after a family member intervened with a firearm. According to relatives, the attacker was a cousin who began stabbing two juveniles inside the shared home before another occupant shot and killed him.

The woman who fired was herself among the stabbing victims. All three injured were transported to local hospitals in stable condition, and the investigation remains ongoing.

MARLIN, TX — A family living under one roof woke before dawn on May 21 to a relative stabbing the children inside, and by the family’s account, it ended when one of the victims grabbed a gun and shot the attacker.

According to the Marlin Police Department, officers responded at about 4:45 a.m. to a disturbance in the 1200 block of Fushie Street. Marlin officers and Falls County Sheriff’s Office deputies found three people with stab wounds, one of whom had also been shot. All three were taken to local hospitals in stable condition. A suspect was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene.

The official release from Chief Hommel keeps it brief and does not say who fired the shot. KWTX filled in the rest through interviews with the family, and that is where this becomes a defensive story.

According to KWTX, a family member said all four people involved lived in the home together, and that the suspect was the cousin of the children’s mother. She said the suspect started stabbing two victims who were under 18, and that one of the other victims was able to defend the juveniles by shooting and killing the attacker. That shooter, she said, was a daughter in the family who was herself one of the wounded.

The mother of the juveniles told KWTX both of her kids are now in stable condition, though her son was originally taken to the ICU. A neighbor across the street said a male juvenile came to his door that morning covered in blood, asking for help, and that he called 911. Marlin City Manager Jason Creasy confirmed two of the victims were juveniles and said the investigation is ongoing.

More from USA Carry:

I want to be careful with the parts that come from family rather than police. The defensive account, who shot whom and why, comes from relatives relayed through local news, not from the official statement. But the confirmed facts and the family account fit together cleanly. Someone in that house was attacking the others with a knife, multiple people were stabbed, and the attack stopped when the attacker was shot.

If that account holds, this is defense of others in its rawest form. A knife is a deadly weapon, and someone actively stabbing children is an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. Meeting that with a firearm to make it stop is exactly what the right to defend yourself and your family exists for.

The detail that stays with me is that the person who fired was reportedly one of the victims, bleeding from her own wounds, and that the attacker was her own relative. That is the hardest version of a defensive encounter there is. She did not get to think it through. She was being stabbed alongside the kids, and she did the one thing that would end it.

There are no winners in something like this. A family member is dead, children are recovering from stab wounds, and the person who ended it has to live with having killed a relative to save the others. The family has asked for privacy and for the community’s thoughts and prayers while investigators work, and that is the right place to leave it.
