BELLEVILLE, IL — A family dispute turned fatal Monday night when a woman shot and killed a man who was physically assaulting her teenage niece on the front porch, according to the Belleville Police Department. The man was later identified as her nephew.

On January 19, 2026, at approximately 8:19 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of State Street after receiving reports of a subject shot. Responding officers found 18-year-old Tayden Dixon of Washington Park, Illinois, near the entrance of the home with a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel administered aid, but Dixon succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Investigators determined that the shooting occurred after occupants inside the home heard loud banging and screaming coming from outside. A 38-year-old woman, concerned for the safety of those inside, went downstairs and observed what appeared to be a physical struggle on the porch. Her 17-year-old niece was engaged in a fight with a larger individual whose face was obscured by a hood. The teen screamed for help multiple times.

Believing her niece was in immediate danger of serious harm or death, the woman opened the door and fired a single shot from her legally-owned firearm. After the altercation ended, the residents realized that the person shot was Dixon — the woman’s nephew and the brother of the girl involved in the fight.

Authorities later determined that Dixon and his sister had arrived at the home unannounced and began arguing, which escalated into a physical altercation. The woman who fired the shot holds a valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and Concealed Carry License.

After reviewing the case, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to file charges against the shooter. The investigation remains closed unless further information arises.

This tragic event underscores the unpredictable and fast-moving nature of violent encounters. When a loved one is under immediate threat, decisions must be made in seconds. The woman responded to what she perceived as a serious and ongoing assault on her niece, taking swift action to stop the threat. Responsible gun owners should continue to train for high-stress situations, focusing on quick threat assessment, legal use of force, and maintaining composure under pressure.
