Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday night inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York City that left a knife-wielding suspect dead.

NYPD Brooklyn South Commanding Officer Assistant Chief Charles Minch said police responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. for a violent man armed with a knife inside the hospital.

The man barricaded himself inside a room on the eighth floor with an elderly patient and a hospital security guard. He allegedly threatened to kill hospital staff, and had cut himself and attempted to cut others, Minch said during a news conference after the incident.

“This incident demonstrates the incredibly dangerous situation that our officers encounter every single day,” Minch said, noting that the information about the incident remained preliminary.

Minch said officers encountered blood throughout the room and door area and issued repeated verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon. Police attempted to use Tasers multiple times, but they were ineffective.

When the man “advanced toward officers with the weapon in his hand,” officers discharged their firearms, striking him, Minch said. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.

The knife was recovered at the scene, and the entire incident was captured on officers’ body cameras, police said.

A law enforcement source told Fox News Digital the suspect was armed with a knife inside the hospital and security called for help.

The NYPD issued a statement on X asking the public to avoid the vicinity of 6th Street and 7th Avenue in Brooklyn at the time “due to a police investigation.”
