MANDEVILLE, LA — A violent domestic assault in a quiet Mandeville-area neighborhood ended with a fatal defensive shooting early Monday morning when a neighbor intervened to stop a knife attack.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on December 15, deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire on East Richland Drive in the Greenleaves Subdivision. Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased male in a yard and a woman nearby suffering from stab wounds.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident began inside a home where a man allegedly attacked his girlfriend with a knife. The woman managed to escape through a window and ran to a neighbor’s home seeking help. As the attacker followed her and continued the assault outside, a nearby resident exited his home, commanded the assailant to stop, and ultimately shot him when he refused and continued the violent attack.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation. As of now, no charges have been filed.

“This was a violent and extremely dangerous situation that unfolded in a local neighborhood during early morning hours,” said Sheriff Randy Smith. “Based on the information we have at this time, the neighbor’s actions appear to have prevented further serious injury or loss of life.”

In this case, the neighbor’s swift response likely saved a life. Recognizing a clear and immediate danger, he acted decisively to stop the attack and protect the victim. It’s a powerful reminder that while most hope to never face such a moment, being prepared to act—especially in defense of others—can make all the difference when seconds count.
