AXTON, VA — A late-night domestic dispute in Henry County ended in a fatal shooting on November 11, 2025, but authorities have determined that no charges will be filed following an initial investigation.

Deputies responded to a call at approximately 11:35 PM reporting a gunshot victim at a residence on Sand Stone Court in Axton. When they arrived, they found 46-year-old Ronald W. McGugan dead from a gunshot wound.

According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred after an argument between McGugan, his brother, and other family members. Investigators processed the scene and conducted multiple witness interviews. After reviewing the evidence in consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, law enforcement concluded that no charges would be filed in connection with the incident.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office or the local Crime Stoppers line.

This incident highlights the complex and often unpredictable nature of domestic disputes, where tensions can escalate rapidly. In any confrontation, especially involving family members, it is critical to prioritize de-escalation whenever possible. However, when confronted with an immediate threat to life, individuals may lawfully act in self-defense under Virginia law, provided the force used is reasonable and necessary to stop the threat.
