PINEVILLE, NC (2-minute read) — A quiet Saturday evening at the Brook Apartments in Pineville was shattered when an argument between family members ended in gunfire, leaving one man dead and a 13-year-old boy traumatized after witnessing his father’s killing.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on Oakbrook Drive. A nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, recorded video of the argument and described hearing two gunshots ring out.

Police identified the victim as 37-year-old Jose Roberto Ferreira. Investigators say Ferreira’s own nephew, 23-year-old Johann Ibarra, shot him after a heated dispute. Ferreira had reportedly stepped in to break up an argument between Ibarra and his girlfriend. The situation spilled outside before returning indoors, where Ferreira’s son allegedly overheard Ibarra threaten to shoot his father, and then saw him carry out the threat.

Witness Accounts and Arrest

According to police and neighbors, Ibarra ran from the scene immediately after the shooting. He was located shortly afterward at the B&M Food Mart on Lancaster Highway and taken into custody. Ibarra is now charged with murder as the investigation continues.

This tragic incident is a grim reminder of how quickly personal disputes can escalate, especially when people can’t control their tempers. Such moments can leave lifelong emotional scars, particularly on children who are exposed to violence.

Safety Tip: If tensions begin to escalate in a personal dispute, it’s crucial to remove yourself from the situation and seek help from law enforcement before it turns violent. Never allow emotions to drive actions, especially when a firearm is present.
