Smith & Wesson has announced the launch of its latest addition to the M&P lineup: the M&P Shield X series. Positioned as a next-generation concealed carry pistol, the Shield X brings a host of ergonomic and functional enhancements, building off the legacy of the Shield series and incorporating refinements inspired by the Bodyguard 2.0.

Chambered in 9mm, the Shield X comes standard with 13+1 and 15+1 capacity magazines, with a 10+1 capacity option available for compliant markets. Its 3.6-inch stainless-steel barrel is slightly extended compared to typical subcompact offerings, striking a balance between concealability and shootability.

Designed with versatility in mind, the Shield X features:

  • A redesigned ergonomic grip with a lengthened profile and extended beavertail
  • Undercut trigger guard for a higher grip and improved control
  • Aggressive front and rear slide serrations
  • Integrated accessory rail and squared trigger guard for compatibility with lights and lasers
  • RMSc/K optics-ready footprint
  • Ameriglo Trooper night sights with a LumiGreen front and serrated u-notch rear
  • Smith & Wesson’s ClearSight Cut to deflect gas away from red dot optics

Grant Dubuc, Director of Product Innovation at Smith & Wesson, emphasized the goal of improving fit and control for shooters of all hand sizes. “Drawing inspiration from the Bodyguard 2.0, we introduced several refinements… improving control and comfort without compromising concealability,” Dubuc said.

As someone who has carried the Bodyguard 2.0 since its release and is currently evaluating the Bodyguard 2.0 Carry Comp, this new entry immediately caught my attention. Its size, specs, and purpose-driven enhancements align closely with current market leaders. The Shield X appears to sit right in the sweet spot of capacity, optics readiness, and comfort—areas where modern concealed carriers increasingly expect excellence.

The inclusion of the ClearSight Cut will be an interesting feature to test out, especially for red dot users who’ve dealt with carbon and gas buildup on the glass during extended range sessions.

Overall, the M&P Shield X looks like a promising option for those seeking a micro 9mm with above-average capacity and thoughtful ergonomics. A hands-on review is definitely on the horizon.
