Homeowner Fatally Shoots Intruder During Break-In; Deceased Intruder’s Mother Found Dead in Neighboring Home

HOBBS, NM — In the early morning hours of September 13, 2024, a homeowner in Hobbs, New Mexico, fatally shot an intruder during a break-in at a residence on the 2100 block of North Rojo. According to the Hobbs Police Department, officers responded to a report of breaking and entering and discovered that 38-year-old Curtis Thames had forced his way into a nearby residence.

The homeowners, fearing for their safety, barricaded themselves in a bedroom with a firearm. During the incident, one of the homeowners fired a round through the bedroom door, striking Thames. Thames was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident took a more tragic turn when officers learned that Thames’ mother, Kristie Thames, lived with him in a neighboring home. Concerned for her welfare, officers attempted to contact her but received no response. They forced entry into the neighboring residence, where they discovered Mrs. Thames deceased in a bedroom. Her cause of death is under investigation, and it is currently unclear whether her death is connected to the break-in or another unrelated event.

As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional information regarding Mrs. Thames’ death or the events leading up to the break-in.

This case highlights the importance of homeowners being prepared to protect themselves during home invasions. Barricading oneself in a secure area, such as a bedroom, and maintaining access to a defensive tool like a firearm can be critical steps in ensuring personal safety. It’s also essential to stay aware of local laws and understand the responsibility that comes with using deadly force in self-defense situations.

It’s also worth considering the protection offered by self-defense insurance. In incidents like this, even when a shooting is justified, legal battles can arise. Having self-defense insurance can help cover legal costs, provide access to attorneys, and offer peace of mind, knowing that you’re prepared for both the physical and legal aftermath of defending yourself and your loved ones.
